Educocity – an Education Tech Start-up to Watch Out!
Apr 16th, 2012 by Dolly Bhasin

Educocity (http://www.educocity.com), launched in 2011, is an education tech start-up which promotes & shouts for collaborative pedagogy along with blended learning. People at Educocity firmly believe that modern day education means much more than the traditional one way communication that happens in the classroom between the teacher and the student.

Today education requires holistic guidance in & outside of the classroom; and requires continuous parental engagement.
Studies show teens typically have:

  1. higher grade point averages,
  2. higher test scores on standardized and classroom assessments
  3. enrollment in more rigorous academic courses
  4. more classes passed,
  5. more credits earned toward graduation and
  6. higher graduation rates, when parents are involved in education.

Keeping this in mind, Educocity has developed an unique Social Learning Management System called ‘GUIDE’ which stands for Grow as yoU Identify Delight in Education. GUIDE is unique in many ways, but most importantly it is designed in such a fashion that Parents, irrespective of their academic qualification or level of computer proficiency, are as important a part of the system as Teachers, Students & Administration are. GUIDE’s uncluttered interface and social network like user experience encourages everyone to connect to the school system multiple times a week, build a strong virtual community and take part in decision making.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES
This unique and modern approach has been well appreciated from all quarters and recently Educocity has been chosen as one of the top 10 start-up companies at Pitch It! 2011 by IIT Bombay (http://ecell.in/pitchit/).

Also Educocity has been shortlisted for the prestigious Social New Venture Challenge 2012 by University of Chicago Booth School of Business (http://blogs.chicagobooth.edu/n/blogs/blog.aspx?nav=main&webtag=nvc&entry=60).

Ms. Sangeeta Mehra discussed some of the nuances of Educational Publishing in India through her experiences with Pearson, VRVirtual Bookshop and other educational initiatives. While Mr. Prashant, shared the work being done on Indian languages standards and sought the industry to work with them to consolidate the effort by providing their valuable inputs. A questionnaire was circulated for the feedback on same. Ms. Jaya Jha discussed the various myths of Going Digital. She iterated that every publisher needs to plan their journey to go digital, some may just consider the strategy to experiment with few new titles, some may try the same with low print run titles, or as they deem fit considering their business. She also indicated that Piracy is not just restricted to e-publishing, any book can be pirated whether printed or e-published. The main reason of piracy in e-publishing is due to non-availability of the content in some geographies, or the price is too high or the DRM protected copies are too complicated for readers.

The last session of the day was on E-Content Creation New Technologies & Self Publishing. This session was also chaired by Ms. Dolly Bhasin. A rapid change is occurring in Content creation approaches and underlying publishing technologies. Women’s Empowerment – Why Business Should Care
Dec 17th, 2011 by Manish

“Women’s Empowerment – Why Business Should Care”, a half day consultation based on the UN Global Compact Women’s Empowerment Principles

India Habitat Centre, New Delhi
15th December 2011 from 2 PM to 5.30 PM

Theme:
Gender Equality has been recognized as an important driver for over all development of human societies. Globally governments and companies are increasingly focusing on innovative policies and programmes for empowering women to participate fully in economic and social life across all sectors. NGOs have also been playing a crucial role in this endeavor as partners and knowledge leaders.

The adoption of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP) by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) initiative, the largest CSR initiative in the world, on 8th March 2010 has been an important milestone for engagement on the issue by Businesses globally. While emphasizing the definite business case for Companies to actively encourage women’s empowerment, the Principles recognize that inclusion of women’s talents, skills, experience and energies require intentional actions and deliberate policies. The Principles thus provide a set of considerations to help Companies focus on key elements integral to promoting gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community.

Organisers:
CARE India, a not for profit company, registered under section 25 of the Companies Act 1956, currently works on education, health and livelihoods with primary focus on 100 districts across the states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, MP, Odisha, UP, AP, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Pondicherry, Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Women and girls are at the heart of all our interventions. With 61 years of experience of implementing large scale projects across India, as a UNGC signatory and as a member of the Global Compact Network, India (GCN, India), we have a natural interest in efforts to strengthen the WEP in India. The Consultation on “Women’s Empowerment – Why Business Should Care” is our first effort to engage with Businesses in India on the issue.

Objectives:
The Consultation would be an opportunity for a select group of thought leaders and practitioners from Businesses to come together under a common platform to explore in-depth issues around women in business; looking at current best practices and identifying problems, obstacles as well as possible solutions, focusing on women within companies, in the supply chain and in communities within the sphere of influence of respective companies. We hope that this would be the beginning of a continued engagement to support practical ways to incorporate women’s empowerment into business practice and strategy.
